Alebrijes
Alebrijes are unique artistic pieces that represent extraordinary creatures and figures. Alebrijes are crafted out of Copal wood and carefully painted by hand, using ancient Zapotec carving traditions. Most of the Alebrijes today are made in Oaxaca, especially in the San Martín Tilcajete and San Antonio Arrazola region.
There are many theories explaining the origin of Alebrijes. The most commonly heard is that one day Pedro Linares, a Mexican artisan, laid in bed suffering from a severe illness. In his visions he imagined bizarre and extraordinary creatures that shouted the words "Alebrijes! Alebrijes! Alebrijes!." When he recovered from his illness, Linares began to depict the creatures that haunted his dreams. The tradition spread rapidly and became one of the most recognized artistic traditions in Mexico Today, artists that create Alebrijes are rapidly disappearing. Many of the artisans have switched to higher paying jobs, while others have migrated to cities in search of a higher quality of life. Because of this, it is important to emphasize that by buying an Alebrije you are not only acquiring a unique and extraordinary piece of art, you are encouraging its production as well as stimulating the survival of cultural traditions and improving the life of the people that depend on these forms of art.
