Aztec Calendars
The Aztec Calendar, also known as The Sun Stone, is a representation of Tonatiuh, an Aztec god linked with the “fifth sun”. Meticulously engraved around the stone’s periphery, a complex mash-up of symbols represent the days of the year, giving rise to its popular name, the “calendar”. This colossal stone, dating back to 1479, is a round basalt disc with a diameter of 11.8 ft, 48 inches of thickness and weighs 24 tonnes. The gigantic disc is adorned with finicky engravings that detail the Aztec’s cosmological vision and tell the myths and stories related that surrounded the cult of the sun. Although it is popularly called the “calendar”, many scholars believe this term is incorrect, as the stone was probably used as an altar for sacrifices during rituals related to the worship of the sun. Whether called Aztec Calendar or The Sun Stone, this mesmerizing rock has become a representative symbol of the Aztec culture and of our country, Mexico.
